How to create the perfect Wedding Stationery
by Hannah Wilkinson from Knock Knock Penny Studio
THINK ABOUT YOUR BUDGET
Firstly, make sure you do your research! You may realise you’re planning two weddings – the Pinterest one and the one you can actually afford.
You don’t want to spend money and then find that you have missed out on something you really wanted. Find out what is important to you and what is important to make your day work well. You can get lots of inspiration from Pinterest, Instagram & wedding blogs. As a wedding stationer I am always happy to talk through your day and look at your Pinterest to make sure we can really create what you will love.
If you have a large budget & can have your Pinterest fantasy then you will have lots of choices of finish. This can include foiling, embossing, thicker paper stocks & you could even get a completely bespoke suite that is perfectly & uniquely designed for your day.
If you have a budget it’s important to think what items & different finishes are important to you. The letterpress invitations you’ve probably coveted are a big budget item, so if you really want them you might have to cut the budget in other areas.
A lot of stationers offer pre-made or printable designs that can be easily edited by colour to match your day. This is a great way to save you some of your precious budget.
You also need to consider ‘day of’ items like menus, place names & order of services. These items can be crucial to the way your days runs.
Having these items executed well can stop the main topic of conversation being what a certain menu item is to guests missing key events while they nip to their room.
The layout of your day will also affect your choices and budget. If you have separate day and evening guests you will need different invitations & if you have menu options it may affect how you want people to RSVP.
For couples having a destination wedding you may want to send a ‘save the date’ out before the official invitation. This allows guests to arrange travel and days off in advance when you might not yet know your ceremony time or the finer details.
WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR WEDDING STATIONARY
The most important things to include are your names, the date of the wedding, the venue & the time of your wedding. You also need to include how you want people to RSVP (this could be by reply card, website or a text).
Including maps within your stationery can be really useful especially if it’s not a great sat nav area. Other sections you can add are the gift list, menu choices, travel/accommodation details and the dress code.
WHAT YOU MIGHT NEED ON THE DAY
- Signage is very useful at directing your guests to the appropriate areas at the right times.
- Order of services for the church service.
- An Order of the Day can be helpful at the reception so guests know when the first dance and cake cutting will take place.
- Place Names.
- Table numbers/ names.
- Table Plan/ Escort Cards.
THINK ABOUT YOUR THEME
Now you know what you need to include it’s time to think about how you want your invitations to look. I know a lot of couples are heading away from a ‘theme’ as such but everyone has a certain design aesthetic that they follow whether it’s rustic, geometric or monochrome.
Try and think of ways to include the main aspects of that style into your stationery, as this is the first thing your guests will see ahead of your wedding. You want to create the right first impression, as it will affect the way guests view the wedding and how they feel and dress for it.
This is especially important for the ‘Day of’ items as you don’t want to spend a fortune on flowers and favours and have the stationery let the pictures down.
DESIGN YOUR SUITE TO ENHANCE YOUR DAY
If you’re having a church wedding you may want to create your own Order of Service with a special thank you or who the bridal party are. If you’re having a destination wedding you might want to make order of services that double up as fans to keep your guests cool. You could even create menus with quizzes or speech bingo on the back to entertain your guests. You can make stationery do really interesting things that really impress your guests.
ADD SPECIAL TOUCHES WHERE YOU CAN
Again this will depend on your budget but there are lovely ways to incorporate special touches into your wedding suite and day.
This could be with special finishes to your invitations like foiling, letterpress or the thickness/texture of your paper stock. Alternatively you can do it by adding envelope liners, ribbon or wax seals.
